Computer diagnostics of a car involve connecting a special diagnostic device (OBD scanner) to the vehicle’s onboard computer to read and analyze data stored in the car’s electronic systems. Modern vehicles are equipped with multiple sensors and control modules that monitor and manage various functions such as the engine, braking system, safety features, air conditioning, and multimedia systems.

How the diagnostic process works:

  1. Connecting the diagnostic device
    The mechanic connects a diagnostic tool (e.g., OBD-II scanner) to the car’s diagnostic port, usually located under the steering wheel or near the dashboard.
  2. Reading error codes
    The scanner communicates with the vehicle’s ECU and retrieves diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that indicate specific system malfunctions or irregularities.
  3. Analyzing the codes
    Each code corresponds to a particular issue, such as ignition system errors, engine temperature sensor faults, or exhaust system problems. Codes may follow standard OBD-II protocols or be specific to the car manufacturer.
  4. Monitoring real-time parameters
    In addition to error codes, the scanner can display live data such as engine RPM, coolant temperature, fuel pressure, and air-fuel ratio, helping identify the root cause of the issue more accurately.
  5. Diagnosis and interpretation
    Based on the collected data, the technician can make a precise diagnosis, identifying faulty components, worn-out parts, or misconfigurations.
  6. Clearing error codes
    After repairing or replacing faulty components, the mechanic can reset the codes from the ECU to verify the issue has been resolved.
  7. Post-repair testing
    A road test is often performed to ensure all systems are working properly and no new error codes appear.
